Kursaal Continued to Be Self-Financing in 2012

The centre has once again generated a cash surplus, even exceeding initial targets.

In 2012, Kursaal’s activities yet again generated an operating cash surplus (€363,701), meaning the venue continues to be self-financing as it has done since opening, despite the negative consequences of the crisis that have led to a 22% fall in turnover.

In spite of the aforementioned fall, it is important to stress that the centre’s economic performance (as regards its cash surplus) has exceeded previsions for the past financial year, marked by a very unfavourable climate both at home and abroad.

Nevertheless, the centre’s results are certainly positive, since in 2012 the venue hosted the largest number of international events since opening. Worthy of note is the fact that 31% of the congresses held at Kursaal were of an international nature, featuring the 5th Neurobiology of Language Conference (600 delegates), the 15th TCI Annual Global Conference (600), and other congresses related to science and high technology, such as the European Polymer Congress, the NFO12 Conference on Nanophotonics, the Iberian Marine Biology Symposium, the International Conference on High Speed Machining, etc.

Furthermore, the number congresses hosted by Kursaal in 2012 – 26 in total – is also highly significant, since it represents the third highest in the history of the centre. The centre’s corporate and culture event agenda had an estimated economic impact of €48 million on San Sebastian and Guipuzcoa.

Lastly, 2012 was yet again a record year as regards client satisfaction, with an average score of between 8.6 and 10. Similar results were obtained in the survey that the Ikerfel Institute of Market Research and Strategic Marketing conducts for Kursaal every two years. In the survey conducted last summer, the most significant conclusion reached was that the assessment of both locals and delegates attending events at the centre has stabilized.

Along these lines, 75% of the interviewees took a positive view of Kursaal’s agenda, with 7 out of 10 locals having attended some kind of event at the centre’s facilities.
