Both companies are outstanding in their respective sectors when it comes to their commitment to sustainable energy and are both listed on the Iberia 125 CDP index.

Endesa has signed a new electricity supply agreement with Melia Hotels International to ensure that all its hotels and offices in Spain are powered from 100% renewable energy sources. The contract, which will run until September 2015, will cover the hotel chain’s 181 establishments located in Spain.

The deal reinforces both companies’ ongoing commitment to environmental protection and to championing renewable energies, which have zero environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2.

Endesa is one of the companies most heavily involved in the fight against climate change. The most recent report of the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, the main yardstick of climate change, awarded Endesa a score of 96 out of 100, making it the fourth highest valued electric company worldwide. Endesa is also offering tailored solutions allowing the hotel establishments to improve their levels of energy efficiency, with systems that can save up to 80% in lighting power usage, 30% in air conditioning and up to 40% in heating installations.

The contract also reflects the sustainability policy of Melia Hotels International and complements a number of its other initiatives, such as tracking and controlling energy demand, making efficient systems and products standard, and investing in energy savings and awareness among employees. Last year alone, these initiatives helped reduce the hotel group’s CO2 emissions by 7.3% and water consumption by 7.9%. In total, they led to savings of 3.5€ million in 2013. This has allowed Melia Hotels International to improve its score on the latest Carbon Disclosure Project Iberia 125 report, which assesses efforts to mitigate CO2 emissions among the 125 Spanish and Portuguese companies with the highest stock market capitalisation.

Endesa and Melia Hotels International also form part of the Energy Efficiency Platform, an initiative whereby leading companies from different sectors in Spain have come together to lead the way in energy efficiency and in reducing the carbon footprint.
