Of the 43,500 participants who received the vaccine, only 94 have been infected with COVID-19

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced on Monday that its coronavirus vaccine has a 90% effectiveness, after having successfully completed the clinical trials, an announcement that has caused the rebound in the stock market of important companies of the tourism sector such as IAG or Meliá.

Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our trials provides the initial evidence of our vaccine's ability to prevent COVID-19", celebrated Albert Bourla, Pfizer's President and CEO.

Pfizer has indicated that of the more than 43,500 participants who received the vaccine, only 94 have been infected with COVID-19 and said that clinical trials will continue until a total of 164 positives occur, in order to collect more data.

According to the pharmacist, the 90% efficacy rate occurs seven days after the second dose or, in other words, 28 days after vaccination, which is a two-dose schedule.

A "milestone" at a time when "the world needs it most

For Bourla, the company is reaching "this milestone" at a time "when the world needs it most, with infection rates setting new records, hospitals approaching overcapacity and economies struggling to reopen.

"With today's news, we are one step closer to giving people around the world a much-needed breakthrough in helping to end this global health crisis. We look forward to sharing additional efficacy and safety data generated by thousands of participants in the coming weeks," Bourla concluded.
