The Hotel Meliá Castilla has adapted to the new scenario with health and safety plans that offer quality and confidence to its clients

The Tourism Department of the Madrid City Council presented last Friday at the Hotel Meliá Castilla a promotion plan to be launched through the Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB) that will have a budget of 700,000 euros during this 2020.

The aim is to continue supporting a key sector such as tourism and to encourage the holding of congresses and professional meetings in the capital.

The Councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, has presented the main measures included in this plan at the Meliá Castilla Hotel, a benchmark establishment for meeting tourism in Madrid that has also adapted to the new scenario with health and safety plans that offer quality and confidence to its customers.

In her speech, Maíllo stressed that "business tourism accounts for almost 14% of the city's tourism and in 2019 alone generated almost 1,200 million euros in direct expenditure in Madrid". In this sense, he explained that the City Council is going to allocate a specific budget to attract convention, congress and event tourism, and thus generate a significant impact on Madrid's economy.

In addition, Maíllo valued that "security, confidence and innovation are the key pieces for the recovery of the sector; Madrid is doing its homework and is ready to celebrate great events again".

After the crisis caused by the pandemic, both hotels and specialized agencies and service providers are preparing for a return of events that are expected to begin their recovery from September 2020.

An example of this revival of the sector is the Meliá Castilla, which has hosted this presentation. A MICE hotel that has incorporated the specific measures of the Meliá chain, #StaySafeWithMelia, to prevent contagion and generate confidence in its clients, such as managing the capacity and movement of people within the hotel's meeting areas and adapting its event catering to the new situation.

Support for the celebration of events

Madrid wants to host major national events and, especially, those with international participation. For this reason, it will support the holding of this type of meeting in the capital and will collaborate with the companies associated with the Madrid Convention Bureau in the development of its own promotional activities, such as, for example, familiarisation trips or inspection visits.

The first meeting in which this commitment will be materialised is the M&I Forum Europe Autumn, which will be held from 27th to 30th September and will bring together 150 European agencies and 170 Spanish exhibiting companies in the city. This event will serve to check the functioning of the professional shows in the new environment.

In addition, along the same lines, Madrid will reinforce its presence at the specialized international fair IBTM World, which will take place in Bar

Also as a measure of economic support for its member companies, Madrid Convention Bureau will apply a 50 % discount on the fees.

Quality and safety: Safe Tourism Certified

In order to continue guaranteeing the quality and excellence of Madrid's tourism sector, the Madrid Convention Bureau will support all associated companies interested in obtaining Safe Tourism Certified. This official seal, which is promoted by the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality (ICTE), guarantees the implementation of a health risk prevention system against COVID-19.

With the aim of disseminating these health and hygiene protocols that have been adopted in the capital and facilitating their dissemination to potential clients, a series of materials have been developed and are already available on the Madrid Convention Bureau website in Spanish and will soon also be available in English.

Madrid has also produced two new promotional videos, one aimed at the domestic market and the other, in pre-production, at the international market, which is expected to be released in August.
