The wines of La Rioja are the perfect accompaniment to a large number of exquisite dishes, and now also to Spain’s most prestigious fashion designers.

The likes of Angel Schlesser, David Delfin, Devota & Lomba, Duyos, Francis Montesinos, Jesus del Pozo and Roberto Torretta are currently collaborating with 12 of the region’s companies with the aim revamping La Rioja’s brand image.

Within the framework of the project "La Rioja Style", these internationally renowned designers will lend the exclusivity of their designs to the region’s enterprises and products to revamp their facilities and brand image. The initiative is being promoted by the Agency for Economic Development and the Federation of Entrepreneurs of La Rioja in collaboration with the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain.

The idea is to create and promote an innovative and cutting-edge image of La Rioja and, needless to say, the wine and tourism industries both appear on the list of priorities.

David Delfin is currently collaborating in the interior design of the Hotel Finca de los Arandinos’ cellar, and in the launching of a wine to complete the line of wines of Bodegas Sonsierra, which produces the prestigious Iporós.

Francis Montesinos is working on a new brand of wine for Bodegas Sierra Cantabria, located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and owned by the Eguren family.

Roberto Torretta has designed the barrels for the Puerta Gótica wine tourism centre, a project that has just been started up in the historic centre of Logroño. By 2010, the finishing date for this ambitious complex, the old part of the capital of La Rioja will have a residential area and a wine tourism centre comprising an aging cellar, a wine theme hotel, spa, restaurants and a wine bar in the environs of the convent of San Gregorio. The winery will be housed in the convent’s medieval cellars in the first phase of the project, where visitors will be able to taste the wines produced under the Mentor brand name by the end of the year.

For his part, Devota & Lomba has participated in the design of one of the Marques de Vallejo Hotel’s suites, which was scheduled to be opened last month. The firm is also involved in re-launching the Diamante wine brand, produced at the 100-year-old winery Franco Españolas of Logroño, which will offer wine enthusiasts a special edition of this wine.

Modesto Lomba, president of the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain, shares the optimism of the project’s promoters who are confident about the future of this initiative, because more designers and companies are interested in participating, thus sowing the seeds for further business initiatives of this type.

Over the coming months these unique products created by the country’s foremost designers will be available on the market. Furthermore, a large exhibition open to the general public has been planned with the aim of disseminating the results of this innovative initiative.
