Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, president of the Galician regional government, presided over the establishment of the Galician Tourism Council, whose members include OPC Galicia.

The Galician Tourism Council was established at a meeting in which the industry was encouraged to make the most of the region’s natural resources and implement policies based on internationalization and cooperation with an eye to the future. During his speech, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, president of the Galician regional government, stressed the "importance" of the council, whose aim is to "preserve the best" and "increase Galicia’s wealth" in this field, by "engaging all of the sectors involved." Chaired by Yolanda Barbeito, the presence of OPC Galicia among these sectors is especially important, since the institution is a member of the recently established council.

Twenty-five members, including mayors and representatives of the private and public sector, academic community and trade unions, among other, attended this first meeting of the council.

Featuring among this new institution’s chief aims is to increase the region’s international tourism quota, as well as the average stay and tourist spending, thus making a greater contribution to Galicia’s GDP. According to the Galician regional government, the tourist industry currently represents nearly 11% of its GDP, resulting in some 100,000 jobs. In Galicia, the business tourist industry generates yearly revenues of over EUR 43 million and, according to studies conducted by Turgalicia, the region hosts around 1,000 events a year, of which 60% are congresses, 30% conventions and the remaining 10% incentive trips; data that reaffirm the strategic importance of the MICE industry for the region.
