Maritim Supports German Sustainability Code

At the end of January 2013, as a premium partner of the German Convention Bureau (GCB) Maritim signed a declaration of support for the German Sustainability Code.

The German Sustainability Code for the events sector is an initiative of the GCB and the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC), whose guidelines and objectives are summarised on www.fairpflichtet.de. The project, launched in 2012, is supported by the members of both organizations.

On signing the declaration, Maritim undertook to act responsibly in all major aspects of its environmental, economic and social activities. The Sustainability Code establishes 10 guidelines for sustainability, which range from systematically integrating sustainability into business processes to achieving a balance in practice between ecological and economic considerations. No less important are the management of relations with employees and the respectful treatment of people in general, ensuring that no-one is discriminated against on grounds of race, colour, religion or belief. The use of energy and resources is neatly resumed in the slogan: avoid, reduce, regenerate. The implementation process defines goals, rules and workflows, to be optimised and controlled by a sustainability supervisor. The declaration of support is a voluntary commitment to sustainable action, the results of which are formally documented and measured after one year.

In the summer of 2012, Maritim had already launched "PRO Umwelt" ("PRO-environment") – an initiative designed to promote sustainable management. It led to the making of an inventory for all hotels in the areas of energy, waste, water, purchasing, and employee mobility. Maritim is the only German hotel company to date to train all hotel staff as sustainability advisers and has played a pioneering role in introducing eco-project groups in all its properties.

Maritim has long been committed to environmental protection and has already received several awards in this area. In declaring its support for the Sustainability Code, Maritim is committed to further optimisation. "A rolling stone gathers no moss! This applies in particular to sustainability, because there is always room for improvement. You just have to scrutinise every aspect carefully and openly and not be afraid to question long-standing work processes," says Gerd Prochaska, chief operating officer at Maritim Hotels, of the green initiative.

The Maritim Hotelgesellschaft is Germany’s leading hotel group and the company’s nationwide hotel network is complemented by hotels in seven countries overseas: Mauritius, Egypt, Turkey, Malta, Spain, China, and Latvia. The group’s ongoing expansion continues to strengthen its position within the European first-class hotel industry. For more information, please visit www.maritim.com.
