The number of delegates participating in congresses and meetings held in the city of Malaga has quadruplicated in two years, from 8,700 in 2004 to 34,000 in 2006, according to the Andalusian Association of PCOs.

A total of 116 congresses where held in Malaga (excluding seminars, incentives and other types of events) in 2006, as opposed to 53 that were organised in 2003. This increase is chiefly due to the city’s new facilities. Until the recent inauguration of the Congress and Exhibition Centre and a large number of new hotels, the city depended heavily on existing facilities in Torremolinos.

It is hoped that the sector will continue to grow at a rate of seven or eight percent, helped by the completion of the high-speed train connection between the city and Madrid, its national reputation as a congress destination, and the celebration in May of Expomeeting, the 1st Iberian Business Tourism Fair.

Andalusia: ranked third in Spain
