As shown by the results of statistical surveys, studies and opinion polls, in 2007 Germany became the market leader in business tourism – above all trade fairs and exhibitions, as well as conventions, meetings and corporate events – with an 11% share of all international business trips worldwide (Source: German National Tourist Board [GNTB]/IPK International), and a 7.4% growth in Europe. However, increasing competition worldwide and dynamic growth in Asia – especially China – may produce slight shifts in this segment.

According to the results of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report (TTCR), which was conducted for the second time by the World Economic Forum/Switzerland 2008 and which is the first international study on the travel and tourism industry as a locational factor, Germany was ranked in an outstanding third place, out of 130 countries, behind Switzerland and Austria. The country holds a market-leading position with respect to infrastructure, especially road and rail transport as well as air travel. The spectrum that Germany offers in the segment of international trade shows and exhibitions is ranked second worldwide. The study examined a total of 71 variables crucial for calculating ranking. Germany obtained top results in the categories of political legislation/norms, sustainable environmental regulations, health and hygiene, and thus with regard to the general conditions affecting travel and tourism in general.
