First .es Domains Containing “ñ” and other Letters are now Available

Internet domains ending in “.es” can now be registered with letters belonging to the Spanish, Catalonian, Galician and Basque alphabets, such as the letter “ñ”, the cedilla (ç) or the geminated “I” (II) and, and multilingual sign including the diaeresis and accents.

According to Red.es, the organ belonging to the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce which controls the Spanish domain registry, the incorporation of these new letters in URLs will be carried out in stages.

During the first phase, which began the day before yesterday and whose deadline is 30 October at 6pm (Spanish time), those people who have registered a domain before 1 June 2007 will be able to request the inclusion of the newly authorised letters in their URLs. Following this, after the publication of notice 15 days in advance, applications will be accepted from all those requesting changes in their URLs.

The newly authorised letters are as follows: “á”, “à“, “é”, “è”, “í”, “ì”, “ó″, “ò″, “ú”, “ü”, “ñ”, “ç” y “ll”.
