One of the objectives that the Cider Region Tourist Foundation (Asturias) has set for 2008 is to promote the area as a gay tourist destination. With this in mind, the foundation hopes to persuade the area’s hotels to become gay-friendly, since it is a key segment due to the above average spending power of gay tourists.

According to Miguel Angel Naredo, president of the Cider Region Tourist Foundation, the area aims to generate additional revenues by attracting gay visitors who are looking for weekend breaks in the countryside. This quality product is well-adapted to LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals) tourism because gays are among the people who travel most, as well as generally having a higher than average spending power.

With the aim of increasing its market quota, the Tourist Foundation has just promoted the region’s localities in Chueca, a popular gay neighbourhood in Madrid. Among other promotional activities, the foundation plans to launch several ad campaigns, above all in Madrid, the Basque Country and Leon, as well as promoting gay-friendliness and quality in the local tourist industry.
