The Spanish Society of Ophthalmology regards the congress, which has been held in Seville for the last 15 years, as ‘an essential event on the national agenda and one of the best courses in Europe,’ being the only one specializing in refractive surgery whose scientific-health content is recognized by the Health Department of the Andalusian Regional Government.
These types of events are the driving force behind the growth of business tourism, with many advantages, both economic and as regards international promotion, for a city like Seville. The MICE industry is central to the strategies implemented by destinations, since its impact also has a multiplying effect, attracting an increasingly greater number of events. According to the last country ranking of the International Congresses and Conventions Association (ICCA), Spain is one of the main international players in the business tourism industry, occupying 5th place with 533 meetings and a total of 217,724 participants. On the basis of this study, hotel meeting rooms are the most popular venue (41.3%), with the medical industry generating the largest number of events (16.7%), followed by technology, science, industry, and education.
