Are Telecommunications Companies in Crisis?

According to the last report published by CMT, the telecommunications industry has registered a 0.5% drop in turnover in the second quarter of the year. This raises doubts about the strategic and business performance that operators and other agents of the telecommunications industry will have to deal with in the context of the current financial crisis.

With aim of analyzing the situation and getting to know first-hand the industry’s strategic plans, iiR Spain has just announced a new edition of Globalcom, the telecommunications congress that for the last 12 years has brought together the industry’s chief players, which is scheduled for 2-3 December 2008.

Bernardo Lorenzo, director general of telecommunications of the Ministry of Industry, will be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the event, which this year will have 42 keynotes presented by some of the industry’s top executives.

Globalcom 2008 will try to address the main problems that are currently a cause for concern in the industry:

  • Will a single market be created as regards mobile communications?
  • Does the traditional copper network have an expiry date?
  • Do the NGN-Nest Generation Networks represent a new investment and development cycle?
  • Are there really plans for launching new services and, therefore, for creating new networks?
  • Will new infrastructures, such as new-generation broadband networks, be regulated?
  • What measures and procedures can be applied to reduce barriers in the use of radio-electric spectrum?

The event has the support of a committee of honour, which, chaired by the president of Spain Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, includes Miguel Sebastan, minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Reinaldo Rodríguez, president of the CMT, Cesar Alierta, president of Telefonica, Francisco Roman Riechmann, president and managing director of Vodafone Spain, Jean Marc Vignolles, managing director of Orange, Jesus Banegas, president of AETIC, Leandro Perez Manzanera, president of AUTELSI, Antonio Garcia, president of ASTEL, Martin Perez Sanchez, president of ASIMELEC, Miguel Canalejo, president of REDTEL, and Francisco Mellado Garcia, president of COIT.

Globalcom 2009 has been organized in the collaboration with Nae, NeoMetric and Orange as Platinum Sponsors, and Convergys and RedBack Networks as Gold Sponsors.
