The 2009 edition of IMEX, which is due to be held in Frankfurt from 26-28 May, will include a number of new green initiatives, such as biodiesel courtesy buses, the reuse of surplus food, the use of sustainably-sourced materials for bags and printed items, and 100% recycled paper badges.

Based on the findings of the show’s first ever independent audit, conducted by The Carbon Consultancy, Regent Exhibitions, the organizers of IMEX, plan to further reduce their carbon footprint throughout the coming year. According to the results of the audit, IMEX managed to reduce carbon emissions by 6.3% last year, despite an increase in delegate numbers, chiefly in the areas of hosted buyer air travel, IMEX staff travel, and waste reduction. The fact that IMEX became the first in its sector to use hydroelectric power also contributed to reducing the show’s environmental impact.

This year, new initiatives will include the use of 100% recycled paper badges, badge lanyards made of plant silk, biodiesel courtesy buses, and sustainably-sourced materials for bags and printed items, as well as the reuse of surplus food through local farms. Last year IMEX succeeded in reducing its total waste output by 20% and expects to exceed this figure come May. IMEX will also be encouraging those who can to travel by train to Frankfurt. Last year this led to a 70% reduction in the number of flights booked by German hosted buyers and a 30% increase in European buyers booking train travel.

IMEX will again present its Green Awards in 2009, also in partnership with the GMIC. These high profile acknowledgements include a Green Meetings, Green Supplier, Green Exhibitor and Commitment to the Community Award.

In 2008, 3,500 companies representing 150 countries exhibited at IMEX, which was attended by a total of 8,751 visitors, over 3,600 of whom were hosted buyers.

As in previous editions, Event Planner Spain will be showcasing its services at Stand E-300. The Malaga-based event planners Lamar de Eventos will also be exhibiting at the show.
