Forty per cent of travellers travel on holiday, while 24% travel to visit family or friends.

One out of three Spaniards are pointing to the trend of 'staycation' or in other words, domestic travel, according to a recent study by Wakefield Research, which includes Expedia, which also highlights the intention of three out of five travellers to book a stay within six months.

In addition, more than two thirds of those surveyed said they intended to make the same number of trips, or even more than in other years, a fact that invites optimism in the tourism sector.

As for the data corresponding to the European continent, the report shows that the preference for national trips was especially prominent in Spain (42%). In our country, 43% of those surveyed are inclined to book online agencies for holiday trips to rest (40%) or trips to see family and friends (24%).

The survey also reveals that, when choosing accommodation, price and location continue to be determining factors for Spanish travellers.

On the other hand, interest in solo travel increased in France (25%), while Germany and the UK showed greater interest in international travel (18% and 14%, respectively), compared to other countries.

Sustainability and social distancing

In addition to this willingness and desire to travel again, the study highlights three other trends and expectations. Firstly, the greater environmental awareness being acquired by the Millennials and Generation Z.

Two out of three people in these age groups said they wanted to travel in the six months following the pandemic. In contrast, baby boomers and the so-called 'silent generation' (those born before 1945) are more reluctant, with almost 50% of respondents saying they would prefer to wait more than six months.

Generation Z and Millennials are twice as likely to travel to a big city as other age groups. These young users (under 40) are more concerned about the environmental impact of their travel, which may be related to the effects of COVID-19. The data also shows that 69% of Spanish travellers take environmental impact into consideration in their travel choices and plans.

On the other hand, COVID-19 has strengthened e-commerce in all age groups. Wakefield Research found that more than 70% of respondents preferred to book their first trip indirectly and 50% preferred to book on third party booking websites.

The convenience of being able to compare several tourism products in one place and easily complete payment for bookings using digital wallets are some of the main reasons mentioned by respondents for choosing this type of alternative.

Finally, with the COVID-19, the Wakefield Research study indicates that almost 70% of travellers (68% in the case of Spanish tourists) were in favour of being able to check in to their accommodation with minimal interaction with staff.

Generally speaking, respondents also mentioned clear descriptions of room services, facilities and dining options that encourage social distancing as a key factor in their choice.

In the particular case of Spanish travellers, 98% of respondents said that they take negative comments from other users very seriously and that the cleanliness of rooms and conditions of facilities are key factors in forming an opinion and choosing accommodation.
