Germany will lift its general recommendation not to travel to risk areas on 30 September

The Teutonic country will choose to analyse country by country to determine possible alerts

The German government will only maintain its recommendation not to travel to areas considered at risk from the coronavirus pandemic, including Spain, until 30 September, and will instead choose to analyse each country to determine possible alerts.

The current warning, which applies to countries outside the European Union and those belonging to the Schengen area, will remain in force until the end of the month, according to government sources quoted by the DPA news agency.

The German Foreign Office took an unprecedented step in March by imposing a travel warning for everyone, as part of the measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic. In mid-June, it began to lift such warnings, which have been recovered in recent weeks.

The travel warning is intended to act as a deterrent to travel to other countries and allows travellers to cancel their reservations free of charge in Germany.

German agencies called for a change in approach

The change in the German Executive's criteria comes one day after the Association of German Travel Agencies (DRV) asked the Government to "identify the risk areas as precisely and distinctly as possible, similar to what Germany does at district level".

"In this way, the infection process can be counteracted more precisely," explained DRV, for whom "the general warnings do not do justice to the reality of the countries" and should be modified for territories such as the Canary Islands, whose travel warnings they called "disproportionate".

"It is clear that a clear and intelligent strategy is needed from the federal government. Because it is not proportionate to put all the Canary Islands under the travel warning, even though the number of infections is limited to a few areas. Only the cities of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are affected", DRV ruling.
