Work hard, play hard: the new MICE model

The Barcelo Montecastillo enriches the experience of business travellers with a number of initiatives that allow them to disconnect and improve their work performance.

According to the Barometer of Business Trip of the Consultancy firm Brain Trust Consulting Services (CS), business trip spending will increase in Spain in 2017 thanks to the country’s economic recovery. But this will not happen in any old way since most of the global labour force is made up of millennials. A new business traveller profile far-removed from comfortable hotel rooms, millennials want to enrich their experience and more customized treatment. As the MICE industry’s new vanguard, they are looking for ways to mix business with pleasure.

How can the industry adapt to the new expectations of business travellers? Besides providing them with technological amenities and free Wi-Fi, hotels such as the Barcelo Montecastillo also offer their guests the chance to live a different experience in which they can make the most of their free time, without having to leave the resort.

One of the most important factors when choosing accommodation is a gym with classes. In this respect, the Barcelo Montecastillo offers group and individual activities which, as well as allowing guests to disconnect, also focus on aspects that have a positive impact on work performance, like concentration and self-confidence. An example is the Touché Business Programme which applies fencing to business, with strategies, tactics and mental preparation. Furthermore, those guests with less time on their hands or who prefer individual training programmes can book one of the hotel’s fit-suites, a room that can be converted into a VIP gym where they can work out with a personal trainer whenever they want.

In the case of business trip groups, another aspect that should be taken into account is the millennials’ need for networking and socializing with their workmates outside a purely work setting. To this end, the Barcelo Montecastillo has launched its Executive Bootcamp, an intensive activity based on the training American soldiers are put through, which promotes values that are omnipresent in the business world such as team spirit, effort, self-improvement, self-sacrifice and, of course, lots of fun. All these factors have converted it into the team-building activity par excellence for MICE groups.
