The Andalusian cities of Malaga and Cordova will be competing with Alcala de Henares (Madrid), Burgos, Pamplona, Segovia, Tarragona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Valencia and Zaragoza to become European Capital of Culture in 2016. In 2012, the European Union will choose one of the candidates, after a previous screening in 2011. The designated city will receive development funds from the EU.

Every year, two European cities are designated as capitals of culture with the aim of promoting them. In 2016, Poland will be hosting the other capital of culture, whose candidates include the cities of Lublin, Torun and Lodz.
