From 6-12 July, Burgos hosted the 8th edition of the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), geared to promoting intergenerational and international knowledge exchange in the field of nuclear energy, with the aim of analyzing the state of affairs in the current globalized environment.

The congress was attended by around 400 delegates for all over the world – Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Australia, and Korea, among other countries – who delivered 161 presentations and 46 posters in 11 technical sessions, 19 workshops and three plenary sessions, as well as a large number of technical meetings.

In 2012, the board of JJNN (Commission of Young Nuclear Scientists of the Spanish Nuclear Society) considered the idea of submitting a bid to organize the event in Spain in 2014. And, despite knowing that it was going to face stiff competition from Manchester (United Kingdom), New Delhi (India), a country firmly committed to developing nuclear power, and other countries, the commission managed to put together a strong bid with the help of the Burgos Convention Bureau, which was ultimately successful thanks to Burgos’ superb infrastructures, world-class hotels offering excellent value for money, good communications, famous cuisine and wines, and a very interesting social cultural agenda, among other determining factors.

With regard to the congress’ social programme, the organizing committee (JJNN y IYNC) had the firm support of the Burgos Convention Bureau. The programme featured a broad range of activities, such as a tour of a prestigious winery belonging to the Ribera del Duero DO, including wine tasting and a cocktail party, a culinary tour of Burgos’ historical centre, a theme dinner related to the Atapuerca archaeological site, tours of Burgos Cathedral and the Museum of Human Evolution, young fighting bull trials, including a talk on bull breeding, etc.

The previous editions of the congress were held in Bratislava (Slovakia) in 2000, Daejeon (South Korea) in 2002, Toronto (Canada) in 2004, Stockholm (Sweden) in 2006, Interlaken (Switzerland) in 2008, Cape Town (South Africa) in 2010, and in Charlotte (USA) in 2012.
