With this new route, together with those that the company already operates between Madrid-Barajas and Casablanca and Marrakech, easyJet has strengthened its position in the Moroccan market. In fact, it is now the leading carrier between Madrid and Marrakech, ahead of Royal Air Maroc and Iberia, thanks to its fairs which, according to company sources, are quite a bit cheaper (around 32%) than those of its competitors.
easyJet’s announcement coincides with the Moroccan government’s plans to position Tangiers in the city break market. With this objective in mind, it pretends to increase the city’s hotel capacity by 23,000 bed spaces, with the aim of reaching five million overnight stays by 2016. The penetration of low-cost carriers in the Moroccan market – which has always been rather hermetic – will undoubtedly help the Government reach the objectives of its tourism plan, whose overall goal is attract 10 million visitors a year by 2010.
