In the first four months of the year, 5.4 million foreign travellers used low-cost carriers to fly to Spain, 18.6% more than for the same period last year.
Ryanair, easyJet and Air Berlin In order of importance, Ryanair, easyJet and Air Berlin were the chief low-cost carriers flying to Spanish destinations, with an overall market share of 62% during the first four months of the year. With approximately 400,000 passengers, up 7% from the year before, Vueling occupied first place in the ranking of Spanish low cost airlines.
Regular airlines During the same period, regular airlines carried 10.2 million passengers, 1.8% up on figures for the first four months of 2006.
Spanish airport ranking With 15.8% of all arrivals, Palma de Mallorca was the airport most used by low-cost airlines, followed by Barcelona and Malaga, with 13.3% and 12.7%, respectively. The figures for these three airports, which received a total of 2.2 million passengers between the beginning of January and the end of April, were up from 10-12%, well below figures for the airport of Barajas (Madrid), with 634,865 arrivals, and those for Valencia and Tenerife Sur, with increases of 101, 35 and 31%, respectively.
The British top the ranking The British topped the ranking, with 2.09 million arrivals, followed by the Germans, with 1.2 million.
