Easily accessible by road, rail and air, the region has nine provinces – Avila, Burgos, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Zamora – all with their deep-rooted traditions, festivals and customs.

Some of Spain's most outstanding wines are produced in Castile and Leon, one of the country's pioneering regions in wine tourism. An increasingly large number of wineries now offer meeting and event facilities and many are the tours of the region's wine-growing areas, including Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda, Toro, and Bierzo; robust red wines, dry whites, and fruity rosés with which to accompany Castile and Leon's heavenly cuisine.

Crossed by the Tagus and the Duero and hemmed in on all side by mountains, Castile and Leon is home to many valuable ecosystems, from forests and fertile valleys to lakes and barren plains, habitat of a diverse fauna and flora. The Peaks of Europe, Sierra de Gredos, Monte Santiago, the mountains of Sierra de la Demanda, Urbion and Sierra de Ancares, among others, offer perfect conditions for all kinds of outdoor activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, climbing, potholing, adventure sports, hang gliding, horse trekking, canyoning, kayaking, and bird watching, as well as fishing and big and small game hunting.

The St James Way and the Silver Route testifying to the fact that the region has always been an important crossroads, it is unsurprising that Castile and Leon is one of Spain's foremost cultural tourism destinations, examples of its splendid historic heritage abounding in its cities, towns, and villages: the old city and aqueduct of Segovia, the historic centre and walls of Avila, and old town of Salamanca, the Roman goldmines at Las Medulas (Leon), the Gothic cathedral of Burgos, and the archaeological site of Atapuerca (Burgos), all of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Due to its frontier past, the region is also a land of castles, such as those of La Mota and Peñafiel in Valladolid or those of Coca and Ampudia in Segovia and Palencia, respectively.
